Training continues/Competition delayed

I've received word that the 2013 Tough Mudder for NC is being moved from September to November. My training for this event continues even during Hurricane Sandy I was out walking the streets of down town New Bern to carry on.

I've shocked myself plugging in the blow dryer, I've been attempting to carry heavier weight for a distance, all in my mind thinking "Tough Mudder".

My coach and team Captain was my inspiration for the event...this was his 50th B-day experience, however now that the event has moved and our circumstances have changed, I'm still focused on the goal of achievement and completing the Tough Mudder competition.

New Mantra

My tough mutter montra....only have to do it once...

saddened that I have not lost as much weight as I had originally thought. Wasn't as heavy as I thought when the whole training process started. This should be a good thing. :)

Ever day I'm doing some kind of training. Physical or mental, working up to meet the challenge. This is something I seriously want to succeed at and am committed to.

The idea was a "dream" when it began but each day I become one step closer to making the dream a reality.

TOUGH MUDDER  = Sept. 2013!!!  Whoooo Hoo!!

What a true Tough Mudder.  Missing a leg, carrying crutches on his back, carrying the log is part of the competition!!!  Inspiring.

It's a "tough mudder" thing to get a mohawk hair cut on competition day - can't say I've seen too many women done the style, but I've received a double dare - Thanks Lori - so I'll have to line up with the rest of them for it now.  Hey in 7 days I can make into a pixie.  LOL

Headed out for the second 5 mile hike for the June, 2012 training month.  Attempted (not succeeded yet) three real pushups this morning.  At least I'm still trying!!  This is the longest I've committed to physical training since graduating high school, that is an accomplishment in itself.

Happy Sunday!!

It's June which kicks Tough Mudder training up a notch.  Today the walk was 4.5 miles in officer housing on Cherry Point.

It's funny to me how Tough Mudder is consuming the smallest thoughts in my head. On Thursday I woke earlier than necessary for work so I did 8 (girl style) push ups before my normal morning routine. My thought process here is that if I build my upper arm strength with girly pushups, I'll be able to increase the number of real pushups that I can endure.

I didn't experience the "burst" of energy during the 4.5 mile walk today, that I have experienced in the shorter walks, but I'm pleased that the endurance is building. The pain in the leg didn't appear until about the 4 mile mark and that, to me is a good thing.

Besides that now the average temp has increased, and the sun feels quite warm at about mile 3, that I was able to complete the new challenge of distance today, pleases me.

In an effort to assist in my over-all training I invested in a new pair of sneakers. I've also sought out the Hash schedule so that maybe I can begin participating in that again.

Tough Mudder On!!!  I'll continue the 4.5 mile walk on the weekends, with a routine walk daily of about 2.5 miles and an attempt to incorporate some strength training this month as well. I've purchased some light weight dumb-bells which I carry on the short walks. I attempted (without any success) a pull up.  I don't have the upper arm strength to even hang from the bar.  Sad but true, but knowing this is where I need work, encourages me to do research so that maybe in 3 months I'll have upper arm strength to do one!!!

I should have started this blog the day I decided to participate in such a challenge, but better late than never.  Today is May 29, 2012 and if recollection serves correctly I began training for this Tough Mudder Challenge on March 1, 2012.

Some notes on my progress thus far.
In October, 2011 at a doctor's annual visit, I weighed in at 178 pounds
I was basically a couch potatoe and my physical activity consisted of a few laps in the drive way at night while letting out the dogs.
Sometime in February my husband began discussing the Tough Mudder challenge. I was only interested to be a support to him.
Sometime in later February I looked at the Toughmudder web page and felt there is no way in hell I would attempt to try to do such a thing.
Shortly thereafter I committed to trying.....and so the training began.

The training began at a slow paced walk of about 1/4 of a mile, walking on paved roads in my neighborhood, feeling a burning in the thighs as soon as I exited the drive way.

After a week of this I felt it was time to increase the distance, if not the speed, and I guesstimated a distance of 1/2 mile around the neighborhood, continuing on the fairly straight, flat, paved road.

I believe I actually posted on FB in March that I was beginning to train for tough mudder. Friends must have known what it was. I was given overwhelming support and encouragment as well as the recommendation that this was my death wish.

At this point, I may have lost a few pounds and added a little more distance in my walk but I was unable to do a push up, I hadn't done yoga in over a year so the flexibility was poor, and I was pretty winded when I returned home from the walk.  It was still like pulling teeth to get me out there for a walk.  On Tuesday night I was bowling and Friday was shopping so I had at least two days off each week.

April came and the weight was coming off slower, the endurance was building, I was walking a few hills and for longer distances.  Earl felt that for training purposes, to be on track for 2013, I needed to increase my distance a little every month.

On May 1 each weekend is committed to 4 miles...this from my slow beginning of 1/4 mile at a time, he thought I was going to make a 4 mile walk. Who did he think I was...

It's now the end of May and beginning the first weekend in June I'll increase the walk to 4.5 to 5 miles.  My first 4 mile walk was with no breakfast or coffee under my belt and less than 6 hours of sleep.  My left leg was cramping by 2 miles and the knee felt like it was going out of business by 3 miles. The bandana was soaked in sweat, but I arrived to the final destination after clocking 4.25 miles and although tired, I wasn't short of breath.  It felt like such an accomplishment.

Just last weekend I showed Earl what I thought may qualify as a pushup.  He encouraged me and I did one more.  I'm amazed at myself. Who knew.

This mornings weigh in is 158.  I walked 3.5 miles on a wooded trail yesterday up and down winding hills, and ran 1/4 mile of that distance...then went to the beach and walked another mile or more in the sand.  Training is good, climbing stairs isn't the challenge to my lungs as it once was and the sense of achievement is so satisfying, I may become addicted.

This is a blog of my progress.  Let's not lose sight of the final goal.  Tons of work ahead like learning to dive and swim, crawl on my stomach in the mud, keep my balance on narrow beams and so much more.

This is for the wounded warriors....but most of all this is for me!!
